Earlier Wednesday morning, TechCrunch reported that Amazon currently has a $99 Kindle Fire HD 7-inch tablet in production that is set to ship later this year.
An Amazon spokesperson, however, just emailed us and told us the report was not true.
“It’s not happening — we are already at the lowest price points possible for that hardware,” the rep said.
TechCrunch acknowledges Amazon’s comment at the bottom of its story, noting that Amazon referred to “that hardware.” We’ve reached out to Amazon to find out exactly what it means by “that hardware” — is the current 7-inch Kindle Fire HD at its lowest price point? Or is there perhaps another, cheaper Kindle in production? We’ll update the story when we hear back.
