Americans just didn’t chow down on turkey and cranberry relish on Thanksgiving Day. They also took some time to do some shopping.

Experian Hitwise found that retail traffic increased 71 percent this past Thursday when compared to Thanksgiving last year. All told, the top 500 retail Web sites attracted 181 million visits.

Amazon.com led the way — the only pure-play online retailer of the bunch. It saw 25 million visits, up 16 percent from the day before. (That was also an improvement from last year when Wal Mart took the crown on Thanksgiving).

As we noted last week, Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos was everywhere leading up to this holiday season, appearing on Charlie Rose; The Today Show and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

Here’s a look at the traffic on turkey day to the top 5 retailers.
