There’s perhaps no American pastime filled with as many data geeks and stat hounds as baseball, a sport where every aspect of the game is analyzed and dissected in great detail. So, it just goes without saying — as the bats start to crack around Major League Baseball parks this week — that somebody would take the opportunity to pour over the social media stats of the teams.

And that somebody just happens to be Seattle’s Banyan Branch, the social media agency which compiled the infographic below on the top Tweeting and Facebooking teams and players.  And even though Seattle is crawling with geeks, our Seattle Mariners didn’t quite crack the top ten.

Of course, it’s hard to compete with the New York Yankees’ payroll, and, for that matter, its social media presence. The Bronx Bombers are knocking it out of the park when it comes to social media, the top team in baseball with 5.3 million Facebook likes and 550,000 Twitter followers. That was followed by the Red Sox and the Phillies.

The Seattle Mariners — with 44,710 followers on Twitter and 474,927 Facebook likes — didn’t even make the top 10. Ouch. Hope that doesn’t translate to the play on ball diamond.

But the M’s did come in second behind the San Francisco Giants in terms of the total number of Tweets.
