We’ve been closely watching the online retail battle unfold between Amazon.com and Walmart. But there’s one place where Walmart is still winning the price war: brick-and-mortar retail.

Walmart is trying to roll onto Amazon's turf

A study out from Kantar Retail found that Walmart Supercenters were far cheaper than both Amazon.com and Walmart.com when comparing 36 items in the categories of edible grocery; non-edible grocery; health and beauty aids; and general merchandise. The study found that Amazon.com — which only competes with Walmart on grocery items in the Seattle area through Amazon Fresh — was 20.5 percent more expensive. Walmart.com, meanwhile, was seven percent more expensive than the traditional brick-and-mortar store.

The study was based on pricing from a Walmart store in the New England area.

“The study suggests that shoppers fulfilling weekly grocery needs should look to receive a better basket price at a Supercenter compared to these leading online venues,” Robin Sherk, senior analyst at Kantar Retail and contributor to the study, stated in a press release.

Price isn’t all that matters. According to the study, Amazon.com was far better when it came to having items in stock, due in part to its third-party seller marketplace. More on the study from Marketing Daily.
