Startup Weekend already covers a lot of territory across the globe, hosting its 54-hour coding and entrepreneurial marathons in more than 300 cities since it was founded. All told, 65 percent of the events are now held internationally, with upcoming events planned for Melbourne, Australia; Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia; and Barcelona, Spain.

Now, the Seattle non-profit is expanding its foreign footprint even more announcing today that it has established regional headquarters in London and Mexico City.  It is also eyeing possible expansion in Brazil, India and China. The news follows a partnership between Startup Weekend and Mercy Corps — a non-profit relief agency that operates in 41 countries — to bring future events to developing parts  of the world.

“The most important thing we could be doing for society, our economies, and the world right now is helping more people become successful entrepreneurs,” said Startup Weekend CEO Marc Nager. “We’ve had demand for more than 2,000 events this year in over 100 different countries. Regional operations will allow us to scale faster and continue to feed a fundamental shift in communities that are trying to create more vibrant startup ecosystems.”

In addition to expanding geographically, Startup Weekend is going deeper into niche areas in existing markets where it operates. On Monday, the organization announced that it would help host a Startup Weekend Women’s Edition at the Seattle offices of Madrona Venture Group. It also has hosted events around the theme of education.

Startup Weekend has helped launch some well known Internet brands in recents years, including the Seattle online pet sitting service Rover.com and mobile marketplace Zaarly. The organization employs 25 people, and relies on thousands of organizers to pull off events.
