Startup Weekend’s Marc Nager

Startup Weekend announced today that it has acquired StartupDigest, the email newsletter which lists startup-oriented  events in 99 cities around the globe.

Startup Weekend’s Marc Nager offered this explanation of the acquisition, terms of which were not disclosed.

“Startup Weekend is where you go when you have an idea, but before that realization, where do you go to get integrated into your local startup community? StartupDigest has helped serve as the connective tissue among communities around the world, and they have always been a brother to us. Our philosophies and communities are one in the same, and we’ve got no shortage of great ideas to bring even more value to our collective communities and their leaders through this acquisition.”

The acquisition marks the latest move by Startup Weekend, known for its 54-hour entrepreneurial marathons. Just last month, the Seattle non-profit announced Ludovic Ulrich, the former global program manager for Microsoft’s BizSpark program, had joined as chief development officer.

The StartupDigest newsletters have more than 230,000 subscribers in 99 cities, and the software behind the service is being spun off into a new entity called GroupTie. As part of the deal, Editorial Director Jessica Ford and Co-Founder Brendan McManus have joined Startup Weekend. StartupDigest founder Chris McCann and CTO Chris Burnor will lead GroupTie.
