Sony Computer Entertainment of America is shifting some of its hosting services from Amazon Web Services to Rackspace’s OpenStack platform, a move that comes after last year’s high-profile PlayStation Network outage, according to a report by Network World. According to a report by Bloomberg shortly after the outage, the hacker in the Sony incident allegedly created a fake account on AWS and then used the service to launch the attack.
GigaOm reports that the move by Sony to Rackspace is a “high-profile win” for the OpenStack platform, which was created by Rackspace and NASA two years ago. The open-source platform also has the support of Citrix, HP, Dell and others.
The defection follows a series of price reductions of AWS, including one earlier this week.
UPDATE: Sony Computer Entertainment of America issued this statement following the news report by Network World.
“Sony Computer Entertainment America utilizes various hosting options, including those from Amazon Web Services and OpenStack, among others, for its game platforms,” said Dan Race, director of corporate communications with SCEA. “The reports claiming that SCEA is discontinuing its relationship with Amazon Web Services are inaccurate.”
