Google yesterday surprised developers at its Google I/O conference by delivering its augmented reality glasses to the Moscone Center stage via skydivers and announcing that attendees would have the exclusive rights to preorder a preliminary version of the glasses for $1,500, shipping early next year.

But when will average consumers be able to get their hands on these things? The target is around 2014, it turns out.

Brin tells Bloomberg Television in an interview at the show: “These explorer editions I’d like to get out early next year, as I mentioned.  Within a year after that I want to have broad consumer offering.”

We don’t yet know how much the consumer version of Project Glass will cost. In addition to developing the technology for the glasses over the next year or so, Google will need to bring the cost down considerably if it wants to see mass adoption.

But even at the right price, will these things take off? This was my favorite exchange yesterday on Twitter, between Molly Wood of CNET and John Moe of the Marketplace Tech Report.

At what price would you buy Google’s glasses … if any?
