With a kick-off Facebook post propelled by a tweet from major science-fiction fan Paul Allen, tickets have gone on sale for what’s being billed as Seattle’s first annual Science Fiction Film Festival at the Seattle Cinerama theater.

The Festival, which runs April 19th through May 2nd, highlights a number of classic films. Among the titles are the silent Metropolis and new or large-format prints of several movies.

“With the help from our friends at EMP, we are presenting 25 incredible science fiction titles which will include a NEW 70mm print of 2001: A Space Odyssey and screenings of Metropolis with accompaniment from the spectacular Alloy Orchestra,” enthused the official Seattle Cinerama Facebook page.

The event also promises “new sci-fi displays from the Paul G. Allen collection” and notes that Cinerama owner (and Experience Music Project/Science Fiction Hall of Fame, now EMP Museum, founder) Allen has helped underwrite the Festival.

While no current films appear to be on the list, long-time geeks will likely appreciate the variety and inclusion of a number of movies that were considered cutting-edge when they were first released, even if they weren’t box office blockbusters.

For example, showings are planned of Silent Running starring Bruce Dern (and robots Huey, Dewey and Louie), Terry Gilliam’s Brazil, and THX-1138. Perhaps better known on the playbill are the original Tron (70mm print), Terminator and Terminator 2 (the latter also in 70mm), and Star Trek 2 (yes: “Khaaaaaaan!”).

The two-week Festival includes several other movies and seats are generally $12 with higher prices for War of the Worlds, 2001, and Metropolis. Tickets are for sale on the Seattle Cinerama site.

In case you’re wondering, Seattle has also hosted a Science Fiction and Fantasy Short Film Festival, the seventh annual iteration of which was presented by EMP and the Seattle International Film Festival at the Cinerama last month.
