Chief Technology Officer Bill Schrier announced his retirement today after more than 30 years of service to the city.
“Bill Schrier has been an effective and innovative leader in helping Seattle use technology to support our residents, our businesses, and an open government,” said Mayor McGinn in a statement. “Under his leadership Seattle has begun to connect more of our neighborhoods to high-speed fiber broadband, set national standards for accessing information online, and helped create and improve other innovative and effective ways to get the people of Seattle better engaged with their government.”
Schrier’s last day will be May 2, and he’ll be replaced on an interim basis by deputy director of IT Erin Devoto.

UPDATE: Schrier was traveling today and unavailable for a full interview, but in a Twitter message sent to GeekWire he said that he will join e.Republic, a new media company focused on covering the state and local government markets. Based in Folsom, California, the company publishes titles such as Public CIO and Government Technology magazines. He will remain in Seattle in the new position.
