Last week, Redbox parent Coinstar and Verizon announced more details about their joint venture streaming video service, and now the service is being rolled out in a private beta. You can sign up here.

Redbox Instant’s invitation-only beta product offers unlimited streaming of thousands of movies at $8 per month — free for the first month — along with four one-night credits per month for actual DVDs at Redbox kiosks. Customers can pay $9 per month if they want Blu-ray discs.

Redbox Instant will focus solely on movies and has agreements to include streaming content from the pay TV network EPIX and its studio partners Paramount Picture, Lionsgate and MGM 90 days after films debut in the “traditional premium window.” Movies will also be available by electronic sell-through and video-on-demand rental agreements with major studios like NBCUniversal, Relativity and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

The new service does not include TV shows or video games. Shawn Strickland, CEO of the new joint venture, told the AP that Redbox Instant is “targeted squarely at movie lovers.”

Redbox Instant figures to compete directly with Netflix, which offers unlimited streaming of both movies and TV shows for $7.99 per month. Netflix offers a DVD-by-mail and streaming subscription combination for $16 per month.

The service will be available on the web, as well as through home entertainment, tablet and mobile devices, including players for iOS and Android, plus Samsung and LG TVs and Blu-Ray players, and Google TV. More devices — presumably video game consoles — will be announced in the coming months.
