This week on the GeekWire radio show and podcast, we get the inside details on GeekGirlCon, the big event happening this weekend in downtown Seattle.

Our guests in the studio are Erica McGillivray and Susie Rantz, two of the organizers of the conference, which recognizes and celebrates the contribution of women to technology and geek culture with a whole range of activities throughout the weekend. Now in its second year, the event is expected to bring out 3,000 people each day this weekend.

My colleague John Cook is out this week, but joining me in the studio as a guest host is Mark Harris, a Seattle-based technology journalist, originally from the UK, who writes for publications including The Economist and the Sunday Times of London. Some of you may remember Mark for providing the color commentary on our impromptu live stream of the ultimately uneventful Angry Birds stunt at the Space Needle earlier this year. We had so much fun that I asked him to join me for this week’s show.

The show starts with our weekly news roundup, including thoughts on unsettling aspects of Starbucks’ new payments partnership with Square; the landmark landing of the Curiosity rover on Mars; and the hacking of Wired writer Mat Honan’s online accounts.

Our discussion of GeekGirlCon starts around 12:30 in the show above. Tickets for the event are still available at the door this weekend at the Conference Center across from the Washington State Convention and Trade Center in downtown Seattle. Details on the GeekGirlCon site.
