Seattle’s fast-growing South Lake Union neighborhood is getting another boost — this time from the guy who is largely responsible for its transformation.

Paul Allen’s Institute for Brain Science announced today that they will relocate their headquarters from Fremont to Seattle’s South Lake Union neighborhood — the neighborhood that Allen’s Vulcan Real Estate has transformed over the past decade.

“The Allen Institute’s expansion is a testament to its groundbreaking work and the promise of the ambitious research it’s staffing up to undertake,” said Allen in a statement.. “For me, it is especially gratifying that the Institute will be moving to South Lake Union, which has become a vibrant new neighborhood and a center for life science research.”

The planned move comes after Allen donated $300 million to the 9-year-old non-profit scientific organization earlier this year, one of the largest philanthropic commitments ever for neuroscience. The organization, which has been spread among several buildings in Fremont, plans to consolidate operations in a new 245,000 square-foot building at the northwest corner of Mercer St. and Westlake Avenue North.

Vulcan noted that the the building design will incorporate historic elements of the Ford and Pacific McKay buildings, including the terra cotta facades.  At six stories, the building is slated to be completed in the third quarter of 2015..
