A group called Passports with Purpose, started in 2008 by travel bloggers from the Seattle region, is getting closer its 2012 goal of raising $100,000 for Water.org to build wells in Haiti.

This year’s fundraiser and related sweepstakes runs through Tuesday Dec. 11 at 8:59 p.m. Pacific.

It’s the latest in a series of charitable projects funded by donations from readers of the travel bloggers who participate in Passports with Purpose. Donors are entered in a sweepstakes for potential prizes.

“People are so generous to us when we’re out there traveling, in places where you feel like these people have nothing,” said Pam Mandel, one of the founders of Passports with Purpose, speaking to us on the GeekWire radio show and podcast this week.

She explained, “They’ll find a way to make time for you. They’ll find a way to give you directions. General ‘kindness of strangers’ stuff gets experienced by travelers on the road all the time, and it’s so rare that we can actually have a chance to give back. This is our broader effort to give back to the places in the world where people have been so good to us when we travel.”

Here’s a clip of Pam discussing the initiative on the show. You can find out more about the project and donate on the Passports with Purpose website.
