Geeks can rejoice — burlesque is now embracing its inner nerd.

At least four nerd-themed burlesque shows — or nerdlesque — are planned for Seattle, starting this weekend. “Behind the Blue Door,” a Doctor Who-inspired show kicks it all off this Friday and Saturday. “JOYstick!, a video-game themed burlesque show, is July 20-21, and is also a fund-raiser for GeekGirlCon 2012. A Game of Thrones-themed show “Stark Naked” is July 13-14. And “Whedonesque,” burlesque, celebrating any and everything Joss Whedon, is Aug. 24, 25, 31 and Sept. 1.

“I have a been a gamer all my life…and I’ve been involved with the burlesque community for a couple years now,” says Steve Stone, the organizer for JOYstick! and GeekGirlCon’s hospitality and transportation coordinator. “And I’ve noticed that the level of nerds in the community is high. We all like to perform and get on stage. After I helped out with the ‘Whedonesque’ burlesque, I realized that the audience in the city is really there.”

Others have noticed this growth and melding of the nerd and burlesque communities — and so producing events that cater to the two seemed a natural fit. “There’s a great quote from an icon in the burlesque community that ‘burlesque is exposing oneself unapologetically to the world.’ Well, ‘nerdlesque’ is exposing oneself unapologetically to the world as a nerd,” says “Whedonesque” organizer Jessica Obrist, whose first incarnation of the show sold out last summer. “The time is ripe for these types of shows.”

Unfortunately, Obrist informed us that due to popular demand, “Whedonesque” has already sold out. But if you already scored tickets to “Whedonesque,” or can snag some off Craigslist, here’s what you’re in for:

“I don’t like to give too many spoilers, but we definitely are going to touch on Buffy, Angel, Firefly, The Avengers, even tap into Cabin in the Woods,” Obrist says. “We push artists to be inspired by their love of Joss Whedon and create something new, so it’s not just Buffy taking off her pants. I mean, Buffy will take off her pants, but you’re getting something new and different, too.

“It’s a shameless celebration of fan culture with boobs.”
