Here’s an example of a museum adapting to the digital age.

Born from conversation by Southern Polytechnic State University new media students and officials from High Museum in Atlanta, #HighWithoutWalls is a crowdsourced, cloud-based museum exhibit that gives visitors voice and choice in the life of a museum.

The exhibit, hosted on Seattle-based photo-sharing website Trover, is curated by anyone online and offers a forum for art to be viewed on the internet with information about the artist, the location or other pertinent details usually found on information plaques at physical museums.

Two classes at SPSU were instructed to come up with creative ways of getting the new generation involved in contemporary art and museums. The students wanted to have a voice through social media engagement and Trover was a good match to test this new idea.

Users were instructed to take a photo of a great piece of art, upload to Trover and include #highwithoutwalls in the description. The High Museum staff selected its favorite pieces and they were displayed at a one-night event on Nov. 10 at the High Museum. The cloud-based exhibit is still ongoing online.
