Tom Rizzo, a longtime and well-known Microsoft product manager who most recently led product management and competitive strategy for the company’s Office 365 cloud productivity service, has left for a job at one of Microsoft’s cloud-computing competitors.

Rizzo’s newly updated LinkedIn profile says he has moved to Amazon Web Services as a general manager for the EC2 (Elastic Cloud Compute) service, and notes that he is hiring to build out his team.

In his most recent role as a senior director at Microsoft, he has been the company’s public voice for Office 365 as Microsoft challenged Google Apps and shifted to the new Office 365 service from its former Business Productivity Online Suite.

He had been at Microsoft since 1996, working on products including Exchange, SharePoint and SQL Server. We’ve reached out to Rizzo and Microsoft, and will update this post if we hear back.

Update: Microsoft says, “Tom Rizzo brought a considerable amount of energy and passion to the teams he’s been a part of during his seventeen year career at Microsoft.  We wish Tom the very best in his future endeavors and thank him for the contributions he’s made to our business.”
