iPhone users apparently like Google Maps — a lot.

Google’s Jeff Huber announced today that there were more than 10 million downloads of Google Maps for iOS in less than 48 hours after its release last week.

Google Maps is the number one app in 50 countries and became the most popular app just seven hours after the release.

“We’re excited for the positive reception of Google Maps for iPhone around the world,” writes Huber, senior vice president of Commerce and Local. “Congratulations to the Maps Team on the recognition for the passion and hard work they poured into it, for this release and over the last 7+ years.”

Last week’s release of Google Maps for iPhone follows Apple’s shift to its own, much-maligned native mapping application in iOS 6. New features on Google Maps include spoken turn-by-turn directions, which was missing from the previous version of Google Maps built into iPhone.

Another feature is the ability to shake the phone to send the company feedback when users spot something amiss, something Huber mentioned in his post. In addition, Google released a new Google Maps software development kit for iOS, which developers can use to connect to Google Maps in their own apps.

Downloading is one thing but how many will use it.

Use it and use it more than once. 3% of the IB is huge in absolute #’s but tiny by comparison to the IB of Apple’s maps app, or even the pre-iOS6 version of maps.

This is truly fantastic. Kudos to Apple for bending Google into adding turn-by-turn to GooMapsIOS, and kudos to Google for saving iPhone users from mediocre navigation.

anyone know if apple is going to let us make google maps the default map app for the iPhone? in other words, when there is a hot address link in an email and i “click it”, that it opens the address in google maps not apple maps…

      Hey Rich,

That’s a good question. The best solution I could find online is to install something called MapsOpener. You’ll need a jailbroken iPhone to make it work.
