If you were a fan of Defense Grid, then here’s your chance to get into the development of its sequel, Defense Grid 2.
The game’s developers, Bellevue-based Hidden Path Entertainment, launched a Kickstarter effort this week to raise more than $1 million to develop its successor. Hidden Path is hoping that approximately 750,000 fans will help fund the new version of the tower defense strategy game, which will feature “a completely new 20-mission storyline with all new aliens and towers, multiple new game play modes and level types, new conflicts, and enhanced graphics,” according to the company’s release.
It’s the first time the company has used Kickstarter for a campaign. AMD’s Gaming Evolved group and Razer are partnering in the development and contributing rewards for different pledge levels as well.
Fans can choose from 18 different pledge levels, starting at $15, with every backer receiving a free copy of the original Defense Grid PC game immediately, among other goods offered at other levels, and some of their input will go into consideration for the game’s development: “We are bypassing the traditional publisher route and turning directly to our fans for their financial and creative input to bring Defense Grid 2 to life,” said Jeff Pobst, Hidden Path’s chief executive, about the move in a company release.
Hidden Path is taking a tiered approach to the campaign, with new game elements and platforms supported at the $250,000, $500,000, $750,000 and $1 million levels.
As of press time, the campaign had more than 1,600 backers contributing $68,342. The campaign closes Aug. 14.
