Howard Phillips, who rose from the Nintendo of America warehouse to the role of “Gamemaster” and editor of Nintendo Power magazine, resurfaced this week with a new game of his own: “Gamemaster Howard’s Know-It-All.”

He’s looking to raise at least $50,000 on Kickstarter to help take the game from prototype to final release early next year, starting with an iOS version but with stretch goals for reaching other platforms, as well.

Phillips, immortalized in Nintendo Power’s “Howard & Nester” comic strips, stopped by GeekWire recently to demonstrate a prototype of the new game. (We also talked at length about his history with Nintendo, Nintendo Power and video games, and I’ll have more from our conversation in a future post.)

“Know-It-All” taps into research that shows how people learn things that happen in the periphery of their brains.

“You develop a certain understanding, and then you go and develop a greater understanding of other things that are predicated on that first thing, and you don’t even think about that first thing again,” Phillips explained. “But you’re constantly reminded of it, and asked to reapply it.”

The game is designed to work with any type of content, including language, trivia, math, history and popular culture, with content downloaded from the cloud, and the ability to import existing educational content online. The gameplay is simple and fun, letting players concentrate on the game and learn the content automatically in the process.

Targets in excess of the $50,000 Kickstarter goal would include the ability to port the game beyond iOS to platforms including Android, HTML5, Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360 Kinect.

Gamemaster Howard’s Kickstarter project has 28 days to go. Here’s his Kickstarter video.
