It’s not unusual for Facebook to be hiring at its Seattle engineering outpost, but some of its latest job openings represent a new approach.

For the first time the company is hiring product designers to work outside of its headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif. — expanding the Seattle office beyond its current engineering and product management focus.

The idea is to give the Seattle operation the full set of resources needed to develop products on its own, building on the office’s momentum, according to the company. Up to this point, all of Facebook’s more than 90 designers have been located at its headquarters.

The company is looking to hire two product designers, a content strategist and a user experience researcher. The roles aren’t designed for traditional graphic or web designers but instead for people “who understand how to build social products,” a company representative says via email.

Facebook’s Seattle office is its largest engineering outpost outside of California. The company employs more than 90 engineers in Seattle who have worked on products including the new Facebook app for iOS, Desktop Messenger, Video Calling, and components of Facebook’s iPad app.

The office this spring moved to a new location on the outskirts of Seattle’s South Lake Union neighborhood, with additional room to expand.
