Posting from Las Vegas: The market for Windows PCs promises to get more competitive with the news this weekend that  TV maker Vizio will market its own desktop and notebook computers, running Microsoft’s operating system.

An executive with the company, which disrupted the market for televisions with its budget prices, tells Bloomberg News that the computers will go on sale by June — attempting to rival Apple’s design standards at “a price that just doesn’t seem possible.”

Vizio already markets a tablet that runs on Android, and the company says demand has been overwhelming.

The choice of Windows is good news for Microsoft, but this part of a Wall Street Journal story about the initiative caught my attention.

(Vizio CTO Matthew) McRae said his team is working on software that will help Vizio’s televisions to share content, like movies, with its computers and tablets connected to a home network. That software, which Vizio said it plans to offer for competitors’ laptops and tablets as well, will be part of a larger strategy to tie its line of products together.

That type of functionality from a computer maker effectively replaces some of the home networking features of Windows, making the operating system more of a commodity underneath. No doubt Vizio chose Windows because of its familiarity to home users, but it will be interesting to see how long the TV maker sticks with that approach.
