You’ve now got a new way to pay for that tall vanilla decaf latte. Starbucks and Square today formally rolled out their partnership, allowing coffee lovers a new way to pay for their java.
All Things D notes that Square’s mobile payment system is now available at 7,000 stores. Starbucks invested $25 million in Square in August, with Howard Schultz joining the board.
As you can see in the video above, Square allows customers to pay for their specialized drink by simply scanning a barcode at the checkout counter. The Square app links to the user’s credit cor debit card and lets them pay via the app. Capabilities of the app include automatically opening a digital “tab” in the app when walking in the door of a participating store.
And, as we noted last month, digital tipping is coming to the service later next year.
Square’s Jack Dorsey, a co-founder of Twitter, Tweeted this evening: “Starbucks is now on Square! Get your wallet and buy a coffee.”

The Square mobile wallet is available on both iOS and Android, with Tricia Duryee at All Things D noting that Starbucks customers will see the app automatically at participating stores.
