OK, so the companies behind these franchises don’t exactly need our help with extra publicity, but how could we not make “Angry Birds Star Wars” our App of the Week? The Luke Skywalker bird has a lightsaber, the Obi Wan bird has a Jedi force field, the Imperial Pigs fire laser turrets and your ultimate mission is to destroy the Pig Star.

Released this past week, it’s a fun game for a cold November weekend, with lots of nice little touches for Star Wars fans and engaging gameplay in the traditional Angry Birds action-puzzle style.

“The kids are loving it!” says our Facebook follower John Roscoe Ross, who recommended this game in response to our call for favorite apps this past week. (See more good app recommendations from our Facebook followers in this Facebook comment thread.)

The bonus is that it’s available for pretty much every desktop and mobile platform out there, including Kindle Fire, Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8, in addition to iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac OS X and older versions of Windows.

Get more background on the game and download it for your current platform here.

App of the Week is a regular feature of the GeekWire radio show and podcast, airing at 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. Saturdays; and 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sundays on 97.3 KIRO-FM in Seattle (when not preempted by live sports). The show runs every weekend on GeekWire.com. You can get every episode using this RSS feed, subscribe in iTunes. or search for the show on Stitcher.

I dunno, I’m starting to think the Angry Birds may have missed the pig but jumped the shark.

I was in QFC this week and saw Angry Birds gummi treats which had me thinking they’re moving to milk this as a franchise rather than focus on the game. And this crossover just feels like some of those crossover episodes on TV shows in the 70′s that were the hallmark of a post-Shark aerial maneuver.
