Quidsi may be known for operating the online retail store Diapers.com. But now the Amazon.com unit is looking to leverage its relationships with moms and dads for a slightly older demographic.
On Thursday, New Jersey-based Quidsi plans to launch two new sites — Bookworm.com and AfterSchool.com — that will sell a wide range of books, sporting goods and other items for school-aged children, reports The Wall Street Journal.
Bookworm will sell about 45,000 books, offering free shipping on orders of more than $49 and providing recommendations to kids based on past reading habits.
AfterSchool.com will sell a variety of outdoor and sporting gear, pitting the company against retailers like Dick’s Sporting Goods and REI. We wrote about AfterSchool.com earlier this year.
Amazon.com bought Quidsi for $500 million in 2010, and it has continued to add new niche retail sites such as Wag.com (pets) and Casa.com (home decor). Last month, it opened a site for environmentally-friends products called Vine.com. The Wall Street Journal notes that Quidsi runs independently from Amazon.com, even operating its own warehouses.
