Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos went on Jimmy Fallon’s late night show Thursday night and talked about Amazon’s early days, how the company competes with Apple and a potential Amazon smartphone.

Well, Bezos actually said nothing about the smartphone after being prodded by Fallon to spill the beans. But Bezos still discussed plenty more, including how Amazon stacks up against Apple.

“We have a very diferent approach,” Bezos said. “We’re trying to sell a service, not exclusively a hardware device.”

Bezos, who was named Fortune’s Business Person of the Year, also brought along the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire, which shipped this week and is already backordered until Dec. 3.

He also talked about Amazon’s early days and how Bezos would drive packages to the post office in his Chevy Blazer with his wife every night. It’s pretty crazy to see how far the company has come since then.

“That was 18 years ago,” Bezos said. “A lot has happened since then.”

Bezos seems to be everyone at the moment, as the 48-year-old also recently appeared on the Today Show, CNN and The Charlie Rose Show this week.
