We’re still waiting to see how Amazon will upgrade its Kindle lineup, but at least now we know when we’ll know.

Amazon sent out invites a short time ago for a press conference to be held the morning of Sept. 6 in Santa Monica, Calif.

The invitation we received doesn’t provide any details or hints about what Amazon will announce, but given the timing, it would be a surprise if this weren’t the unveiling of the fall revamp for the company’s Kindle devices, including the Kindle Fire and Kindle e-readers.

Amazon is widely expected to come out with new variations of the Kindle Fire, possibly attempting to challenge the iPad more directly with a larger screen. Nate Hoffelder at the Digital Reader blog has been tracking the progress of what appear to be new devices from Amazon as they make their way through the FCC approval process.

Kindle Fire, available only in the U.S. for now, captured 5% of the worldwide tablet market in the second quarter.
