Amazon.com is expanding its footprint again in Seattle with an agreement to occupy a new 380,000-square-foot project on the edge of its existing headquarters campus in the South Lake Union neighborhood.

Paul Allen’s Vulcan Inc. announced the plan this afternoon, saying that it is working with Amazon on the project. The development will consist of two connected buildings and open space along Westlake and 9th Avenues, between Mercer and Republican Streets.

The project will also incorporate a streetcar stop, and 15,000-square-feet of retail space for new restaurants, shops and services.

Construction is set to begin in January, and Amazon is scheduled to move in by early 2015, according to a news release.

The plan is unrelated to Vulcan’s recent decision to sell the existing 1.8-million-square-foot Amazon campus, said Lori Mason Curran, the investment strategy director for Vulcan’s real estate group.

Amazon, which has grown its global workforce to nearly 70,000 people, is separately planning a new development in Seattle’s Denny Triangle neighborhood, south of its headquarters campus. That property is slated to contain three 37-story buildings.
