Amazon just announced its new Kindle app for Windows 8 — getting in on the ground floor with the new Microsoft operating system and the new Windows Store, a day before their official debut.
No word yet on the availability of a Nook app for Windows 8 from rival Barnes & Noble, which is a bit surprising considering that Microsoft and Barnes & Noble are partnering on the Nook business and recently said the Windows 8 app was coming soon. We’ve sent messages to Barnes & Noble and Microsoft representatives, checking on the status.
Update: A Barnes & Noble rep says via email, “We look forward to launching the best reading experience and an expansive digital bookstore on Windows 8 within weeks.”
In a news release from Amazon, Microsoft’s John Richards says, “We’re excited that Amazon created a Kindle app designed especially for Windows 8. Kindle’s great content ecosystem and immersive experience on Windows 8 make it a great choice for our customers around the world.”
As with other Kindle apps, users are able to access books from their Kindle account regardless of device. Here are more screenshots of the Kindle app from the Windows Store.
