Yaletown Venture Partners, a 9-year-old Vancouver, B.C.-based venture capital firm, is establishing a new office in Seattle under the direction of Kirk Washington. The arrival of Yaletown is a shot-in-the-arm for the Seattle venture capital community, which has seen Silicon Valley firms pull out in recent years and some homegrown funds wind down operations.

Washington said he’s looking forward to establishing the office, looking especially for investments in the emerging cleantech sector.

“Our firm’s strategy is to have a strong presence in the regions where we invest,” said Washington. “Our announcement today demonstrates our commitment to the Northwest region where we see strong deal flow and opportunities to partner with industry.”

Yaletown has about $100 million under management. It has been an active player already in the startup scene in Seattle and Portland with investments in Mixpo, Thetus and EnerG2.

Washington joined Yaletown in 2002 after working for 13 years at BallardPower Systems. The announcement was made today at the Venture Northwest Conference in Portland.
