An announcement by Sony this afternoon could give the PlayStation 3 an edge over Microsoft’s Xbox 360 among a certain segment of sports fans … at least those with some spare cash to throw around.

DirecTV is bringing the NFL Sunday Ticket subscription service to the console, the companies announced today. The price for the season: $339.95. Existing DirecTV subscribers can pay $50 to use the PS3 as an additional tuner in the home.

The news comes a day after Sony announced an across-board-price cut for the PS3, trying to better position its console against the Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii.

Microsoft’s Xbox Live offers ESPN content to its gold-level subscribers, with a variety of sports, but not NFL games.
