Microsoft says its Xbox 360 sold more than 960,000 units in the U.S. during the past week, setting a new weekly record for the console as the holiday shopping season began.

More than 800,000 of the consoles were sold in a 24 hour period, according to the company. In addition, the company says it sold more than 750,000 Kinect sensors in the U.S. during the same period.

The news illustrates how the Xbox 360 has become a bright spot in Microsoft’s consumer lineup, even as the company struggles to catch up in areas such as mobile phones and tablets.

Microsoft says it expects Xbox 360 to be the top U.S. console for the month, its eleventh straight month ahead of the PlayStation 3 and the Wii in the country.

Cumulatively, as of the end of September, Nintendo’s Wii still leads the current console generation in worldwide unit sales, with nearly 90 million Wii units sold, although much of that lead came from the early success of the Wii, and sales have since dwindled.

Microsoft reported a cumulative total of 57.6 million Xbox 360 units sold as of Sept. 30, compared with 55.5 million PS3 units sold overall as of the same date.
