Microsoft has recruited former Samsung Vice President Gavin Kim as general manager of the Windows Phone unit, a move to help bolster the software giant’s position in mobile.

The news was first reported by Boy Genius Report, with Kim telling the news site that he will help “accelerate Microsoft’s trajectory to win the hearts and minds of consumers, carriers, device manufacturers, developers and partners.”

That’s going to be a tall task. As previously reported, Microsoft’s Windows Phone market share slipped again — to 5.6 percent — during the three month period ended September 30th, according to comScore.

Kim worked at Samsung for the past three years, most recently serving as vice president of consumer and enterprise services.
