Seattle’s Geraldine DeRuiter started the travel blog, The Everywhereist, after losing her job as a copywriter.

Now, she says the layoff was one of the best things that’s ever happened to her. DeRuiter is getting some additional props today, with The Everywhereist being named by Time magazine as one of the “Best Blogs of 2011.”

DeRuiter started the blog as a hobby to chronicle the travels of her husband, SEOMoz Chief Executive Rand Fishkin. After losing her job, DeRuiter started tagging along with the Seattle entrepreneur on business trips around the world.

The idea was to provide some insights into her life as Fishkin presented at business meetings.

“Yes, it’s a travel blog. But at its core, it’s a love letter to my husband,” she writes in a description of the blog. “A big, long, cuss-filled love letter. The kind he’d appreciate. The only kind I’m able to write.”

(She’s also not afraid to have some fun at the expense of her husband either as you can tell in this recent blog post from Rome).

Time notes about the blog:

It’s hardly your average travel blog: DeRuiter is as likely to write about confusing bathroom fixturesinexplicable foreign TV shows and obnoxious airplane passengers as she is about picturesque towns and exquisite restaurants.

I scanned the list for other Seattle area honorees, and didn’t recognize any among the list of 25. But, please, let me know if I missed someone.
