Ignition Partners and Accel Partners have invested $11 million in ScaleXtreme, a Palo Alto, California-based cloud computing startup. As a result of the investment, Ignition’s Frank Artale — a former Microsoft general manager and ex-CEO of Consera Software — will join the startup’s board.

ScaleXtreme’s product allows IT administrators to manage Amazon EC2 and VMware virtual machine and server deployments.

“There is a dramatic shift going on in the computing industry with the advent of virtualization and public cloud computing – and with this, there is a significant opportunity for some company to transform the management of the new computing landscape,” said ScaleXtreme CEO Nand Mulchandani.

The financing marks the latest investment in a Silicon Valley company by Ignition, a Bellevue venture capital firm led by former Microsoft and McCaw Cellular veterans.
