Groupon Getaways launches travel deals with Expedia

Early last month, Expedia and Groupon announced plans to work on a new discount service for online travel. Well, Groupon Getaways — as the service is known — just went live with deals for the El Dorado Hotel and Spa in Santa Fe; the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City and other vacation discounts.

The partnership between Expedia and Groupon was previously announced, but this marks the first time that deals have been presented to customers.

The partnership will be closely watched by at least one Seattle area startup. Last week, you may recall that we told you about Off & Away’s new daily deal service for hotel rooms.

All Things D has more details on the Expedia-Groupon deal, pointing out that the offering is causing some confusion among customers.

The discounts on travel through Groupon Getaways typically are in the 50 percent range. For example, the companies are currently offering a one-night $144 weekend stay at The Palms Casino Resort. That’s a $299 value.

“Through this partnership, we’re aiming to give the world’s travelers a way to capitalize on travel dreams that might otherwise go unrealized,” said Scott Durchslag, President, Expedia Worldwide. “Travel can be really complex, and this service is simple. Sign up, and our Getaway deals will arrive in your in box. When you see one you like, buy it, then take the trip on your timeline.”

It certainly will be interesting to watch, John.  Obviously, Groupon and Expedia have more reach than us (www.offandaway.com), but we think we excel in a few places like curation, customer service, and quite frankly, value.  At this point, there is really no one that can beat us on the latter.

If you win an auction, you’ll typically get 90-99% off of retail, and if you don’t, you’re going to have your pick of 100,000 hotels at the best published rates on the web (thanks Expedia;) AND from our currently running private sale events (at similar values to the ones quoted above).  Kind of a no-brainer, especially with auto-bid (where you don’t have to spend your time bidding)Also, unlike the Groupon / Expedia experience, Off & Away travelers can choose specific dates ahead of time so they know for certain they’ll be able to stay at the hotel vs. having to worry about availability with a voucher (which we know has been a problem with the Groupon model in general).  There are benefits to both styles (of course), but we think in the end that knowing for certain your dates are available is a better customer experience, and our customer base told us that. All in all, we look forward to growing with the rest of the industry and definitely believe that a rising tide raises all boats.  We also have had a great relationship with Expedia since our launch and look forward to continuing that.

All the best and great write-up!

    Doug

Congratulations to Off & Away! The entertainment shopping field has been experiencing explosive growth. I myself am impressed at the number of sites that offer me everything from iPads to hotel rooms at 90% off retail. This innovative auction model is expected to grow explosively and as a consumer, I feel like I’m winning.

Definitely a site to watch for consumers especially with more companies get into travel deal market. One thing that it’s harder IMHO is sometimes vacation is planned and buying a deal like this can present challenge to a customer. We might even consider adding Travel section to our site at SeattleDealSites.com (http://www.SeattleDealSites.com) :)
