Early last month, Expedia and Groupon announced plans to work on a new discount service for online travel. Well, Groupon Getaways — as the service is known — just went live with deals for the El Dorado Hotel and Spa in Santa Fe; the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City and other vacation discounts.

The partnership between Expedia and Groupon was previously announced, but this marks the first time that deals have been presented to customers.

The partnership will be closely watched by at least one Seattle area startup. Last week, you may recall that we told you about Off & Away’s new daily deal service for hotel rooms.

All Things D has more details on the Expedia-Groupon deal, pointing out that the offering is causing some confusion among customers.

The discounts on travel through Groupon Getaways typically are in the 50 percent range. For example, the companies are currently offering a one-night $144 weekend stay at The Palms Casino Resort. That’s a $299 value.

“Through this partnership, we’re aiming to give the world’s travelers a way to capitalize on travel dreams that might otherwise go unrealized,” said Scott Durchslag, President, Expedia Worldwide. “Travel can be really complex, and this service is simple. Sign up, and our Getaway deals will arrive in your in box. When you see one you like, buy it, then take the trip on your timeline.”
