We must really like to eat in Seattle. Over the years, I’ve chronicled a number of online recipe and food sites that got their start here, from AllRecipes.com to BigOven to Foodista to RecipeZaar.
So, it shouldn’t surprise that yet another upstart rooted right here in the Pacific Northwest is looking to take a bite out of the recipe market. The company is called MyFaveRecipes.com, and it is the brainchild of former Jobster employees Christian Anderson and Pete Mannix.
How is MyFaveRecipes going to stand out from the many competitors?
Anderson tells GeekWire that the company is looking to leverage social media in new ways so that users of the service can share recipes with friends and family members in a snap.
“The site will be first and foremost about recipe sharing,” said Anderson, adding that it will integrate with Facebook and mobile devices such as the iPad. “We think we’ve figured out a super simple way for people to share their favorite recipes with friends as well as fave and edit friends’ recipes — without much of the work associated with writing down a recipe.”
That sounds a bit like BigOven’s new offering, known as RecipeScan, which allows users to snap a photo of a recipe and then have a digital copy delivered in a day or two.
I asked Anderson, who just left his gig at San Francisco-based online ticket startup FanSnap, why Seattle cultivates so many recipe sites. He agreed that it is an oddity.
“There must be something in the water here that causes us all want to brew beer, ground coffee, crush grapes and look for new and exciting ways to make great meals,” he said. “There is a lot of passion in the region around food and some of that probably played into our growing enthusiasm around our recipe sharing idea.”
At this point, Anderson said that MyFaveRecipes.com is self-funded and they are not looking for capital. The company plans to roll out an initial test of the service some time in the next week or so.
