Corbis Images is bolstering its portfolio of photography of Angelina Jolie, Leanardo DiCaprio and other celebs. The Seattle company, owned by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, today purchase Los Angeles-based Splash News for an undisclosed amount.

Founded in 1990, Splash News works with a network of more than 3,000 photographers who capture candid photos and videos to celebrity gossip and news sites. Its images have appeared on TMZ and in The New York Post, among other publications.

The company pays money to those who provide tips on celebrity appearances. It also creates a marketplace where everyday photographers can sell their candid shots of celebrities. Splash proudly claims that it has delivered some of the largest “scoops and scandals” in the entertainment industry, including the first images of Michael Jackson’s first child and Tiger Woods’ mistress in 2009.

“With the addition of Splash, Corbis will provide our customers the most comprehensive, unique and differentiated offering in the high-growth entertainment sector — from candid celebrity to high-end portraiture to motion,” said Gary Shenk, CEO of Corbis. “Splash photographers consistently capture the most significant celebrity stories around the globe, ahead of the competition. ”
