Seattle.gov was given a makeover last fall, integrating social media and streamlining access to city services.

The city of Seattle’s overhauled website, seattle.gov, was named the top city government web portal in the country today in the Center for Digital Government’s annual Best of the Web awards. Previous versions of Seattle’s site won the award in 2000 and 2006.

Seattle’s data portal, data.seattle.gov, separately won a Digital Government Achievement Award from the Group. That site is hosted by Seattle technology firm Socrata.

The redesign of seattle.gov, launched last October, streamlined the site from nine to five sections, increased the integration of social media and provided more direct access to the pages accessed most frequently by citizens.

“When you consider there are 275 cities over 100,000 population and thousands of smaller ones, to get this honor three times in 11 years reflects well on Seattle,” says Bill Schrier, Seattle’s chief technology officer. “But of course, if you look at all the lists, the region is the center of the tech universe, and the City government’s use of tech should reflect that.”

Second place in the city portal category went to Louisville, Ky., followed by Arvada, Colo.; Riverside, Calif.; and Danville, Va. Arkansas won the state portal category.
