Apple released its new iPhone 4S this week, touting an 8 megapixel camera, better battery life and improved speeds. But is that enough to stop the Android juggernaut?

Google’s mobile operating system continues to gain share in the smartphone market, according to a new report out from comScore.

For the three month period ended in August, Android’s share of the U.S. smartphone market rose 5.6 percent to 43.7 percent. Meanwhile, Apple’s share showed slight gains to 27.3 percent, while Microsoft’s Windows Phone was stuck in neutral at just 5.7 percent.

The rise of Android isn’t terrible news for Microsoft, which according to a recent report is making as much as $444 million a year on patent licensing deals related to the mobile OS.

The comScore report found that 84.5 million people in the U.S. now own smartphones, up 10 percent when compared to the previous three month period.

A report released last month by Nielsen found that 56 percent of people who bought a new smartphone in the past three months chose Android.
