AmazonFresh, the online retailer’s grocery delivery service, released a mobile app today, developed on its behalf by digital agency Metia/Seattle. Nope, it’s not for Android, or even iPhone, neither of which has a full-fledged AmazonFresh app yet. It’s for Microsoft’s Windows Phone.

This might seem like a head-scratcher until you realize that the grocery delivery service is only available in the Seattle region, which happens to be home to a disproportionately large number of Windows Phone users, thanks to the more than 40,000 Microsoft employees here.

The new app, available for download in the Windows Phone Marketplace, allows AmazonFresh customers to place and manage their orders.

“By taking full advantage of the Windows Phone operating system, Metia was able to build a mobile shopping experience that is lightning fast, providing AmazonFresh customers the convenience of managing their grocery orders where and when they want,” the company says in a news release. “Within a couple of clicks their orders are instantly delivered to Amazon’s secure servers to be delivered the same day, when available.”

AmazonFresh does have a mobile site optimized for the iPhone.

AmazonFresh launched nearly four years ago in Seattle. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said recently that the company is still tinkering with the business model to try to make it work.
